Walking with God – Bible Study 6

Jacob – From Deceiver to Israel

"Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome." — Genesis 32:28 (NIV)
Welcome to Bible Study 6 of our Walking with God series.
In our previous study, we learned from Rebekah about having a willing heart and trusting God's purpose. Today we continue the journey with her son, Jacob.
Jacob's life is a powerful reminder that God can transform anyone. Although Jacob made many mistakes and often relied on his own plans, God never gave up on him. Through years of challenges, God shaped Jacob into a man of faith and gave him a new name—Israel.
No matter what your past looks like, God is able to change your future.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your patience and Your grace. Thank You that You never stop working in our lives. As we study Jacob's journey, help us to surrender our plans to You and allow You to transform our hearts. Teach us to trust You more each day.
In Yeshua's name, Amen.
Main Bible Reading
* Genesis 25:19–34
* Genesis 27:1–40
* Genesis 28:10–22
* Genesis 32:22–32
* Genesis 33:1–20
Who Was Jacob?
The name Jacob comes from the Hebrew יַעֲקֹב (Ya'akov), meaning "heel holder" or "one who follows."
Jacob was the son of Isaac and Rebekah and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah. Before he was born, God told Rebekah that Jacob would play an important role in His plan.
Jacob became known for deceiving his brother Esau to receive the family blessing. Because of this, he had to flee from home. During his journey, God met him in a dream at Bethel, where Jacob saw a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending.
Years later, Jacob wrestled with God through the night. Instead of leaving him unchanged, God gave Jacob a new name—Israel, meaning "one who struggles with God" or "God prevails." This marked the beginning of a transformed life.
Through Jacob's twelve sons, God established the twelve tribes of Israel, from whom the Messiah, Yeshua, would eventually come.
Historical Background
Jacob lived around 1900 BC.
He spent many years living with his uncle Laban.
Jacob married Leah and Rachel and became the father of twelve sons, who became the twelve tribes of Israel.
His life demonstrates God's faithfulness across generations.

Walking with God Today
Take a few moments to reflect:
* Is there an area of my life that God wants to transform?
* Am I trusting God or trying to solve everything myself?
* Is there someone I need to forgive or seek forgiveness from?
* What does it mean for me to surrender fully to God?
Family Discussion
1. Why did Jacob have to leave home?
2. What happened in Jacob's dream at Bethel?
3. Why did God change Jacob's name?
4. What does Jacob's story teach us about God's grace?
5. How does Jacob's life point us to Yeshua?
Today's Challenge
✓ Read Genesis Chapters 25–33.
✓ Memorise Genesis 32:28.
✓ Pray for God to transform an area of your life.
✓ Forgive someone who has hurt you, or ask forgiveness if needed.
✓ Trust God's plan instead of relying only on your own understanding.
Let's Pray
Father, thank You for never giving up on me. Just as You transformed Jacob, transform my heart so that I may become more like Yeshua. Help me to trust Your plans, walk in obedience, and live each day by faith. Thank You for Your grace that gives me a new beginning.
In Yeshua's name, Amen.
Looking Ahead...
Bible Study 7 – Rachel: Love, Patience and God's Plan
Next week, we will learn from Rachel, a woman who experienced love, seasons of waiting, disappointment, and God's faithfulness. Her story reminds us that even when life does not unfold as we expect, God is still working out His perfect plan.
"Then God remembered Rachel; He listened to her and enabled her to conceive." — Genesis 30:22 (NIV)
May the Lord continue to guide your steps as you walk with Him. Trust His timing, remain faithful, and remember that He is always working for your good and His glory.
